4 Steps to Control Bleeding

5 Tips to Control Bleeding
Reading Time: < 1 minute

Bleeding is very common. No-one can say that they didn’t bleed at least once.

Whether from a small cut, an open big wound, a nose bleed, a broken vessel in your nose. It’s a scary thing to witness but an easy thing to stop. Yet the first thing to stop -before even attending to the blood- is fear, or nervousness.

It can be scary, but if you’re calm and smart you can fix it quickly!
These small steps can make a big difference to any patient.

The most important part of applying first aid to any bleeding patient is to ensure that the patient is calm. This will naturally help slow the bleeding.

  • Step 1:  Check for any dangers (knives, sharp objects, traffic, animals or anything else that may cause harm to yourself)

  • Step 2: Put on disposal gloves and give reassurance to your patient. This will help naturally slow the bleeding

  • Step 3: Check nothing is embedded in the wound and apply direct pressure with a gauze or non-adherent dressing and use a bandage to maintain a firm amount of pressure. If the bleeding continues to repeat again but do not remove original bandage or dressing.

  • Step 4: Call an ambulance if bleeding is unable to be stopped or if your patient loses consciousness at any stage throughout treatment

Remember, a big part of attending a wound it to keep calm and to encourage the patient to the same and if in doubt always call a professional caretaker.
