Heat Stroke is anextremelyserious condition that can easily result in death. (up to 50% mortality rate of diagnosed Heat Stroke symptoms)
Important signs and symptoms of Heat Stroke are:
Skin hot to the touch but NOT SWEATING;
Recent exposure to extreme temperatures;
Headache and dizziness;
Unconsciousness.
Unlike Heat Exhaustion, where a person is visibly sweating and distressed, a person suffering from Heat Stroke can no longer control their body’s temperature due to exposure to excessive heat and is no longer sweating.
What to do:
Cool down by applying ice packs to the neck, groin and armpits, removal of excessive clothing and application of cold water (Place patient in a cold shower, or under a running hose – do not immerse in a bath or pool)
Call 000 urgently;
Allow patient to have small sips of water, or electrolyte drinks if available
