Heat Stroke is an extremely serious condition that can easily result in death. (up to 50% mortality rate of diagnosed Heat Stroke symptoms)

Important signs and symptoms of Heat Stroke are:

  • Skin hot to the touch but NOT SWEATING;
  • Recent exposure to extreme temperatures;
  • Headache and dizziness;
  • Unconsciousness.

Unlike Heat Exhaustion, where a person is visibly sweating and distressed, a person suffering from Heat Stroke can no longer control their body’s temperature due to exposure to excessive heat and is no longer sweating.

What to do:

  • Cool down by applying ice packs to the neck, groin and armpits, removal of excessive clothing and application of cold water (Place patient in a cold shower, or under a running hose   – do not immerse in a bath or pool)
  • Call 000 urgently;
  • Allow patient to have small sips of water, or electrolyte drinks  if available
