3 STEPS TO TREAT JELLYFISH STINGS

Jellyfish stings are caused by the simultaneous release of thousands of capsules called nematocysts that discharge venom when in contact with human skin.

While Australian tropical waters lay claim to life-threatening jellies like the Box jellyfish and Ira-kanji, the most common jellyfish stings will hurt a little (maybe even a lot) but are usually fine if managed quickly.

FIRST AID:

  1. Rest the person and be ready to manage any existing medical conditions, especially respiratory conditions like asthma or anaphylaxis. Kids can sometimes hyperventilate too, just from fright.
  2. Rinse the stung area with seawater and pick off any remaining tentacles.
  3. Depending on what’s available, either apply ice or sit the person under a hot shower.

If pain persists or stung area is more than half a limb, call 000 and seek help from Surf Lifesavers if available.
